Overview

If you stay near Narita airport, Naritasan Shishoji & SAWARA are ideal places to visit. Sawara flourished as an important transportation point of rivers Tone and Ono crossing in Edo era. Still now the town is well preserved retaining nostalgic atmosphere and you can travel back in time to Edo era. The district has been added to Japan Heritage site, and listed in Michelin Green Guide since more and more travelers visit here from overseas. Boat cruise (reservation needed) and rent a bicycle are available on your request. Then move to Narita st. At the main gate of Naritasan Shinshoji temple eight different Buddha images and beautifully colored three story pagoda welcome you. Experience Goma ritual held inside the main hall every hour. Head to Great Pagoda of peace where historical artifacts and treasures of this temple are displayed. Then walk in Narita san Park filled with seasonal flowers, pond, waterfall and fountain. The tour finishes at JR/Keisei Narita station.

The Tour Guide will meet you at JR Sawara st. Or the tour guide will pick you up at JR Narita st., then get on the train via Sawara st.

Historic Old Town area in Sawara, Katori
Along the Ono river well preserved traditional old houses and weeping trees are lined in nostalgic Edo atmosphere. The district has been added to Japan Heritage site, and the houses are history museums, craftsman shops, restaurants and other souvenir shops. Baked eel with sweet soy sauce is specialty here in Sawara. Interesting way to see the historic landscape is by Boat (reservation needed, 1300 yen/adult) from where you can experience a different view.

Tokun Sake brewery with 190 year's history have a guided tour about how to make and store Sake in the brewery. The tour guide will translate in English. After tour free sake tasting is available. Shop sells various kinds of sake, sweets & jelly mixed with sake and other souvenirs.

Naritasan Shinsho-ji Temple
The tour starts with stroll along the Omotesando approach path toward Naritasan Shinshoji temple. The long path is lined with many Japanese Inns, Restaurants, Sake shops and Souvenir shops, and known for delicious boiled eels on rice.

At the big-scaled Main Gate of Naritasan Shinshoji temple, the big lantern and a pair of scary faced Deva Kings welcome you. Within the compound beautifully curved Three storied Pagoda, Pagoda of Peace are other halls are located. In the Main hall Goma Ritual is held by burning goma sticks every day.

Great Pagoda of Peace
58 meters high Heiwa no Daito, Great peace pagoda is the symbol of Shingon sect of Buddhism. Inside there are exhibitions about how Kabuki family are related to this temple, the history and treasures of this temple are stored.
